Financial Resources For Adoption

We understand that adoption is not inexpensive. Our fees are determined based on expenses, and include certain unavoidable costs such as rent, utilities, telephones, printing, supplies and postage, as well as compensation for our staff. Our fees must cover all operating expenses and provide sufficient reserve to cover months without placements or expenses incurred in connection with children who are ultimately not placed for adoption with our clients. The following financing ideas may be helpful for your family:

Adoption Loans: Some banks offer loans tailored specifically for adoption. *SoFi and LightStream (a division of SunTrust Bank) offer low interest, unsecured loans to adoptive parents with good credit. For information on SoFi loans visit and for information on LightStream loans visit

Many Credit Unions offer an adoption loan program. Most banks offer home equity loans for adoptions or equity lines of credit with the interest qualifying for a tax deduction. Check with your bank and tax accountant concerning eligibility for the tax deduction. Also, below are a few online loan options:

  • Upstart - Upstart is one of the best adoption loans to consider if you have good to average credit or limited credit history. The minimum credit score to qualify is 620. Adoption Tax Credit: (2018)

This provides a tax credit (an amount that can be deducted directly from the taxes you owe) for expenses incurred in the adoption of a child who is not the child of the taxpayer's spouse.
